The Senior Concert Band
(SCB) was successful in the Concert Band Championships at Newcastle over the long weekend. Competing against a 'B' Grade band with a handicap of 7.5 points, SCB came home with a win by 4.5 points The SCB won the Hymn without handicap by 2points, but was out-pointed by the Uni Band in the Own Choice.

In the Festival of the Bands the winner was Cardiff North Lakes Brass Band who had gone to some lengths to work up a routine of comedy, novelty instrumentation and some fine playing. As Carol Irving (SCB 1st Clarinet) & Glenn Moore (SCB MD) both played on permit to CNL they had a great day, with both a Championship and a Festival win.

Congratulations to Andrew (Perc) Lucy (Clarinet) Grace (Sax) Anita (Flute & Piccolo) David (String Dbl Bass) Marg (Clarinet) Sue ( Clarinet) Pen (Trumpet) Amanda (Trumpet) Marc (Sax) and Nathan (Bari Sax) for their first contest performance with the Senior Concert Band. Special thanks to our permit players Ron Boaden (CNL Band, Bass Trombone) and Anthony Fowler (CNL Band, Trombone).

Outside it was a wet day in Newcastle, with players having almost a long swim rather than drive to get there. However, inside it was a fine day of banding, catching up with old friends and colleagues (nice to have Erin Theoret, Sax and Suzie Marley, clarinet, both in our ensemble again). All was capped off with a spectacular cornet feature from the 1st cornet of St Marys' Band Club Brass, just returned from Queensland State solos of the Saturday of this weekend. There she had won the Qld State Cornet Solo contest. A beautiful playing of "My Love is Like a Red Red Rose', backed by a band with great dynamics and a lovely counter melody from their 1st seat euphonium.
