The Young Guns Concert Band has been in operation since February 2008. Under the leadership of Frank Rugers and Ann Hamilton, has developed the bands numbers to 45. The band is gaining a fine reputation which has offered a high level of music for the students involved. The band has been mentored by members of the Senior Concert Band and this has proven to be a very successful method of developing the band into a functioning ensemble as quickly as it has. The YG Concert Band has been very busy since its inception. Performances have included Darling Harbour Maritime Museum, The Officers Mess at Randwick Barracks for the Australian Army and a combined Christmas Concert to sell out audience with the Central Coast Concert Band. Other performances have included at Westport Club on two occasions with the NSW Performing Arts Senior Wind Ensemble; a combined concert with the Australian Army Band Sydney at Panthers Club (2009) and North Haven Bowling Club 2010; a combined concert with the St Pius X College Band (Chatswood) (2008) at Westport Club; open day at Westport Club, performances at the Koala Hospital, The netball finals, the Dutch Society, The Comboyne Show, Seniors week Concert and the Town Green. The band has assisted other ventures on Anzac Day, Celebrations at The Pines, and other street marches and functions.
The Band travelled to Sydney in 2008 for a three day tour. In 2009 the band travelled to the Gold Coast for a five day tour and performed at 3 shopping centres and at Dream World. In July 2010 the band travelled to Hong Kong for 6 days to participate in the Asia Pacific Band Directors’ Association Band Festival. The trip also included additional performances at Disneyland and Ocean Park. The Band has been invited to Singapore in 2012.
This ensemble has given the young people of Port Macquarie the opportunity to express themselves musically at a high level and provides a personal challenge to each member to improve his/her skills. This challenge is intermixed with cultural opportunities throughout Australia and Asia for members of the band and their families. The Last Word can be found at http://young-guns.pmhmb.org/ |
